Best Rap CD's of 2008

Honestly I don't remember too many CD's of '08. I don't know if there just weren't alot of CD's or if they just weren't any good.

Young Jeezy's 3rd Album "The Recession." was probably the best rap album to me. Jeezy who has always been criticized for his lack of lyrically dexterity came out swinging on the entire CD. It was graceful, it was intense, and it was real. He maintained his "everyman" image. He still is a brand for the streets and still goes hard.

Lil Wayne's album " The Carter III" boasted big name producers and guest stars. But you know what...I miss Manny Fresh. It's crazy that I can listen to the Carter I and II and honestly say that those are better than The Carter III. While this album moved plenty of units and solidified Wanye as a rap superstar it did nothing for the fans that were riding with him since day one. The feature verses that he did throughout the last 2 years were better than the majority of the content on this album. But hey "long hair don't care."

The homie Chuck Taylor goes hard for his Coast! On The Game's 3rd album "LAX." He makes you feel the Cali love. From song to song he gives you the rundown of California life. This CD makes you wanna get a drop top lowrider and ride around blasting the CD. The Game once again proves that he doesn't need Dr. Dre or other writers to make a banging album.

T.I.'s post arrest CD "Paper Trail," is kinda amazing. In the sense that everybody heard a majority of the album months before it came out and it still did great on the charts. T.I's still KING.

Nas's CD "Untitled," was supposed to be called "Nigger." But to the delight of many older persons, the CD's name was changed to "Untitled." Honestly most of the hype around the album for me is that it was going to be called "Nigger," but when that fell through so did the anticipation for me. It was an ok album but nothing to mind altering, or earth shattering happened during me listening. But the odd thing is the mixtape Nas released with DJ Green Lantern "The Nigger Mixtape." Was way better than the album.

Ok so it's not technically a RAP album, but there are rappers on it and Ye is a producer and to be honest its on of the best albums and one of the most creative efforts of the year. Kanye's 4th album "808's & Heartbreak" explores Kanye's singy-er side. The production is great and the melodies are classic. He took flack for this album when he said it was going to be all Auto-Tune (that T-Pain), but really you don't notice it. Its a classic, he went there and he did it right!

Last night was the premiere episode of the reality show (yayyy another one) "Daddy's Girls"starring Angela (hot) and Vanessa (hotter) Simmons. The show shoulda been called "Rev. Run calls his and Daughters and the TK Show." The whole show was about the break up of Angela and skateboarding and rapper Terry Kennedy aka TK. Who Angela revealed, broke up with her because she wasn't going to have sex before marriage. Hey atleast he didn't fake the funk and say "yeah baby that's cool we can just cuddle and whatnot." Then they have their cousin (i think) who sounds like a man, (I'm hoping she has a cold), sleeping on the couch. Two other chicks that might be hot...I don't really remember. Then some weird dude shows up for a blind date named Shue or something. The show was pretty dumb.

Backwards Life

I had my reservations about seeing the Curious Case Of Benjamin Button after I heard that it had a running time of about 3 hours, but then I remembered seeing the previews and telling myself, that might be an awesome movie and guess what??? It was.

I think the cool part about the movie is that Brad Pitt is just playing a guy. Sure its Science Fiction, but he wasn't trying to save the world or change peoples lives, he was just living his....as backwards as it may have been. It reminds my of Forrest Gump (without thee ummm...specialness of it) and its only 22 mins longer than Forrest Gump. But the movie doesn't seem as long as it is b/c of the story, it just builds and keeps going. Their really isn't a slow point to this movie.

At the end you realize that this movie is about a guy that was just living his life the best way he could with the hand that he was dealt.

And really between his production skills, and the heart and intelligence and humor that come across in his music, he has as much of a chance at making a run at the title as anyone these days, in my opinion. Not that I think there is a title, or that there should be. "

Now do I agree with 7th place. Hell no. I figured 410 Pharaohs was gonna get #1 cause they are on that Baltimore Shit! A lil club, a lil hip-hop. #2 is Brown Fish's "Bootleg III: F.I.S.H. & Friends... The Mixtape," which Al even says isn't a mixtape or an album. #3 is a compliation of songs from the Wire. "Beyond Hamsterdam: Baltimore Tracks from The Wire," so once again some Baltimore shit. Honestly from the cover alone I shoulda got #1. But I digress, I'm sounding Kanye-ish. I appreciative of Al even having a list or caring enough to put one together let alone putting me on it. I'm just saying.

From the guys that brought you "300" and "Sin City" now they bring you ...ahhh...something else. The Spirit is a hero of a crook ridden city. Unsure of his origin he stops crime, gets shot, stabbed, dies, comes back to life and heals all in the same day. The movie is visually creative but the dialogue and some of the situations were just corny. Samuel L. Jackson is a villain by the name of "The Octopus." Eva Mendes plays jewel thief "San Serif," and Scarlett Johannson plays the Octopus' assistant "Lace & Floss." Its got plenty of eye candy but deep it is not. It sorta wonders off a bit too and you get lost in the babble of the Spirits monologue at times. Rent it for the babes!

I saw Seven Pounds this weekend, starring Will Smith. This was a good movie, it kept you wondering what were his motives behind finding these people and "helping" them. I figured it out about half way through the film, but that did not take away from the feeling of this movie. When everything comes together, it does it fast and clean. The umm jellyfish thing was a bit out there (very) but it was a great film.

Burn After Reading

Burn After Reading was cool. The moral of the story is "mind your damn business." There weren't any black people in this movie, but if there were the movie would have been over rather quickly. After finding a CD in the woman's locker room of a local fitness center, some of the employees decide to take it upon themselves to try to get ransom for the CD. If a black person found the CD and popped it in (unlikely) and it was Young Jeezy or for the older crowd Luther Vandross its trash movie over!! But this movie has some great twists in it.

Zack and Miri Made a Porno...kinda

Me and my brother Mark Shotta went to he movies yesterday and saw "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." It was a funny damn movie and it makes you never want to go to Pittsburgh for anything...ever. Kevin Smith is one of my favorite directors, I like how he incorporates characters or actors from his movies into other films...looking out for his homies, I dig that. Jason Mewes ("Jay" of Jay and Silent Bob) shows up and the dude from Clerks does as well. Homie from The Office (Craig Robinson) plays a bigger role in this movie then any of his previous roles in "Knocked Up," and "Pineapple Express."


The one flaw of the movie is that it kinda doesn't end. It leads to an ending...you think there's an ending but there is no ending. It just goes off and deviates from the whole premise of the movie. Overall it gets 3.5 stars.
