Comic Book Week DAY 2

Things I find funny about comic books is that they can kill off anybody for any reason and then bring then back. Somehow Colossus died and then somewhere along the line someone thought to bring him back, and without any explanation whatsoever he returned almost out of thin air and no one questioned it.

Then you have those issues that go kinda wasted even if its some sort of social message in it. Like this issue where Alpha Flight member NorthStar pretty much comes out the the closet to his sister.

This I believe is the oldest comic I have. I think it's from 1978 or so. I've never read it though. Not much of a DC fan, its just too corny.

So what happens when your body gets snatched and goes on a crazed rampage? Ask Psylocke ooooooooooor ask Wolverine as he is being held hostage. Another character killed and bought back several times.

Comic Book Week!!!

When I was little I used to hit up Geppi's at the Harbor all the time for the newest Marvel cards and comics. Then I used to cop Ultra Fleer cards at Eastpoint Mall from this stand for 4 bucks a pack and trade 'em in middle school. Then my Pop bought me a couple whole sets of series. I don't really read them anymore (Except for DEADPOOL) or follow any of the story lines but I COLLECT!

So Here We Go!

500th issue of Spider Man -- I'm not really much of a Spider-Man reader but he comes through every now and again.

This issue Spidey contemplates quittin the game but we all know that the hustle never stops.

Just a dope Wolverine cover. However he ends up looking like Lobo.

The only Aquaman comic I have and he is fighting off a giant crab....sounds like he needs to go to the clinic to me but what do I know. Anyhow I think Entourage should have actually spun off to make this a movie even though it was a running joke in the series I think followers of the show would have thought it was cool and supported the movie.

Back tomorrow with more!

Advice to the older homies

A reader asked me what advice I could give to the older homies since I gave advice to the younger homies a few days ago.

Here are a few:

Take care of your kids and your family
Strap it up
If you're getting money like Robin Hood give a little too
Stop trying to be cool either you are or you aren't
Wake Up
Get a blood test
Get a job
Believe in something
Educate yourself and educate others without being preachy
Learn how to do something
READ
Stop blaming other people
Stop getting chicks pregnant that you really don't like cause chances are she didnt get pregnant the first time you two got together
Don't be mad that she wants to keep the baby
Get a blood test
Think before you speak because you're words and actions are usually under a microscope
Stop drinking so much
Stop smoking so much
Teach the kids how to do and be better
Stop trying to be something you're not

I am sure there are more but that should be a good start to somewhere.

Fucking Ipod's

So about 2 weeks ago I plug my Ipod in my computer to charge it and when I do to disconnect it EVERYTHING IS GONE. Wiped clean! 120GBs of music gone. And its not so much the music because it's all backed up on my external hard drive. My playlists though are not saved. Those contain my beats and songs in a certain order. The order of which are very important for my OCD. You would think by now the house that Steve built would figure a way to not let this happen. There's a new Itunes download every other week updating who knows what. New Ipads cool, but let's make sure these Ipods are fully functional before all the new gadgets make way.

Kanye West Beat Tape from 2001

Some ppl are making a lot of this tape saying that it is poorly mixed. Maybe, maybe not. but you gotta think that in 2001 he was just getting his feet in the door and prob had so many people and projects to work on that he didn't have time to give the whole beat and proper mix. Really all you need is the vibe of the track and if you think its dope he would prob go in and tweak it later. Really at some point what would be the point in fully polishing a beat that somebody might not pick? Esp when he prob had so much going on at the time. Additionally when an artist picks a beat (and if they have half a brain) they track it out anyway soooooooo things would get touched up there too. Listen and enjoy.

President Trump

Lots of talk in the air about should Donald Trump (aka The Don) run for President. My thoughts, sure why not. He has ran businesses successfully for years and like to think of it this way or not America IS a business. I think he would look at things from a different angle, less political and more what makes sense. Now do I think he will actually run. No. But it would definitely be interesting if he decided to. Hopefully he'd get more jobs over here. Less Casinos and more jobs.

I thought it was going to be this great adventure film with crazy effects but it turned out to be The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Sci-Fi version. The movie starts off depressing and pretty much stays there. The only hope given is actually visions that are imagined in the main characters mind. Then they say that the girls dancing skills are so good....but you never see them! What a cop out. Bad movie...bottom line. Jon Hamm shows up in this as the Doctor. Jumper

I saw Jumper for the 1st time today. Not bad. Plot was pretty dumb but ehh oh well. The movie posed more questions than answers though. The Paladins hunted the "Jumpers" b/c they felt that nobody should have that kind of power but God, so how did they figure they had the some power to kill. Especially with the understanding that God made the Jumpers. Seems as if it would be very easy to kill Roland (Sam Jackson's character) by just taking him to the Empire State Building and dropping him off of it. And if Hayden's character 1st "jumped" when he was 5 why didn't he do it again til he was like 13? And why did he pick the school library of all places? And how come Rachael's character never asked where he went for 8 years? But I digress, its a movie and they only have so much time to explain things without it getting totally boring.

Lupe Fiaco - Lasers

This is indeed a FIASCO! I had been seeing the chatter on the internets about how bad this album was. But as a true listener, student of music and fan of Lu I purchase Lasers ( I mean it's called Lasers -- that's a kick ass title.) The build up was epic. His fans rally for him get a petition signed for the label to let him release music. A few days go pass and Lupe takes a photo with a person from the label as if things are good to go.

The single comes out --- "The Show Goes On" produced by Kane beats. COOL! Dope message in the lyrics the beat is more bells and whistles then I'm used to from Lu but is nice. Another song hits the net. "Words I Should've Said" ILL!! Tells why he didn't vote for Obama and a host of other issues --- its deep! So now I'm listening to the album and its pretty bad. Trey Songz?? I fuck with Trigga and they are label mates and what have you but this is just wrong. The lyrics aren't bad the beat isn't bad it's just a bad combination ( sorry Street). And unfortunately the whole album pretty much plays this way. Very bad mixes of odd beats to good lyrics.

But where this really falls short are the songs that are very forced. These songs sound like reference tracks for another artist. Not Lupe though. I mean this is just bizarre. I am not all the way mad at him though. The machine needs its money and it's stars and he still pretty much said fuck the label on a couple tracks on the album so you can feel where he is coming from. This is one of those Prince, SLAVE on the face moments. Hopefully Lu can bounce back and make another classic with producers that we the fans have actually heard of and songs that we and Lupe actually enjoy.

Last Emperor - Secret Wars

While his album was very unmemorable The Last Emperor made one of the best rap songs ever in 1999 titled Secret Wars. It was a play on the Marvel Comic series of the same name where different characters were pitted against one another to see who would be the victor. The Last Emperor puts rappers against the comic book characters in a vivid and exciting display of words and creativity. He goes off track a bit with the Ninja Turtle and G.I. Steve Stoute Writes A Letter To The Grammys

Record Exec turned Business man Steve Stoute recently wrote a letter to the Grammy Voting Board. I think the letter is pretty accurate in its claims and seeing as how this years Grammys was super lame the Board needs to take note.

Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay — so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter. Where I think that the Grammys fail stems from two key sources: (1) over-zealousness to produce a popular show that is at odds with its own system of voting and (2) fundamental disrespect of cultural shifts as being viable and artistic.

As an institution that celebrates artistic works of musicians, singers, songwriters, producers and technical specialists, we have come to expect that the Grammys upholds all of the values that reflect the very best in music that is born from our culture. Unfortunately, the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case. Not only is Eminem the best-selling artist of the last decade, but The Marshall Mathers LP was a critical and commercial success that sold over 10 million albums in the United States (19 million worldwide), while Steely Dan sold less than 10% of that amount and came and went as quietly as a church mouse. Or consider even that in 2008 at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, after going into the night as the most-nominated artist, Kanye West’s Graduation was beaten out for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. (This was the first time in 43 years that a jazz album won this category.) While there is no doubt in my mind of the artistic talents of Steely Dan or Herbie Hancock, we must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation. It is this same cultural impact that acknowledged the commercial and critical success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1984.

Just so that I’m not showing partiality to hip-hop artists (although it would be an entirely different letter as to how hip-hop music has been totally diminished as an art form by this organization), how is it that Justin Bieber, an artist that defines what it means to be a modern artist, did not win Best New Artist? Again, his cultural impact and success are even more quantifiable if you factor in his YouTube and Vevo viewership — the fact that he was a talent born entirely of the digital age whose story was crafted in the most humble method of being “discovered” purely for his singing ability (and it should be noted that Justin Bieber plays piano and guitar, as evidenced on his early viral videos).

So while these very artists that the public acknowledges as being worthy of their money and fandom are snubbed year after year at the Grammys, the awards show has absolutely no qualms in inviting these same artists to perform. At first I thought that you were not paying attention to the fact that the mental complexion of the world is becoming tanned, that multiculturalism and poly-ethnicity are driving new meaning as to what is culturally relevant. Interesting that the Grammys understands cultural relevance when it comes to using Eminem’s, Kanye West’s or Justin Bieber’s name in the billing to ensure viewership and to deliver the all-too-important ratings for its advertisers.

What truly inspired the writing of this letter was that this most recent show fed my suspicions. As the show was coming to a close and just prior to presenting the award for Album Of The Year, the band Arcade Fire performed “Month of May” — only to… surprise… win the category and, in a moment of sheer coincidence, happened to be prepared to perform “Ready to Start.”

Does the Grammys intentionally use artists for their celebrity, popularity and cultural appeal when they already know the winners and then program a show against this expectation? Meanwhile the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences hides behind the “peer” voting system to escape culpability for not even rethinking its approach.

And I imagine that next year there will be another televised super-close-up of an astonished front-runner as they come to the realization before a national audience… that he or she was used.

You are being called to task at this very moment, NARAS.

And to all of the artists that attend the Grammys: Stop accepting the invitation to be the upset of the year and demand that this body upholds its mission for advocacy and support of artistry as culture evolves.
Demand that they change this system and truly reflect and truly acknowledge your art.

Steve Stoute

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

I love fighting games, and the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise is a pretty great one.....but this one is sort of lacking. The story is pretty much non-existent but that's not really relevant. The gameplay is awesome. The online mode is great with the exception that you can't see the game being played unless you're playing in that particular match. What really gets me is the character selection. They scaled back alot in this installment and it seems like key character from the Marvel side are missing. It would be great if Venom, Carnage, Silver Surfer, DareDevil, Cable, Psylocke, MegaMan, The Mandarin, SabreTooth, Strong Guy....I could go on. But, when I see characters like Arthur and Tron its like super weird and gimmicky. But all in all the game is fantastic, just a few minor character flaws.

Walk Like An Egpytian

Egyptians are clearly upset...and I guess right fully so. Think I learned about this whole mess is that the US gives Egypt 1 Billion Dollars a year. Really?? Really?? Yeah really. But that's not the point of this post. I have heard some believe that this will eventually take place as well in the United States. These are my reasons why I doubt it.

1) No matter how much people complain about America, its a pretty good place to live.

2) Americans are lazy. Ask someone to actually get up and do something about an issue is the best way to not get it done. People couldn't stop Twittering (tweeting) or updating their Facebook Status' long enough for them to stop a riot.

3) The only issues that seem to get debate over are Gay Rights, everybody's new trend "Bullying" and Universal Health Care.

4) I think a lot of people would die. Reason - Things go in order from City -- State --- National. So that means the Police are you're first line of action. Police gonna shoot ya! I mean Police are tasing white women in America --- WHITE WOMEN! If the good ole boys of the Confederacy could see this America they would be outraged.

The time Al Gore won the election but then it turned out Florida wanted to give it to George W. Bush, that would have been a great time to RIOT (protest).

Bailing out the financial organizations and still leaving the people to pay the bill while the CEO's gave people Millions in bonuses basically laughing in everyones face --- Great time to Riot (protest).

Ya see there is always a good reason to Riot (protest) we just don't do anything about it.

127 Hours

Man this was deep. Guy goes hiking, he falls down a crevice and a rock pins his hand to the cave wall and is stuck for 5 days. The first 2 days is him trying to get his hand unstuck and rationing his food and water. He flirts with the idea of having to cut off his arm. He made a video diary with the camcorder that he carried with him. The scene where he cut his arm off was more grusome then any horror movie I've because it was something that really happened and the fear and pain and agony was beautifully bought out in the film. James Franco did an excellent job playing this role. This is in the same vein as Castaway, one actor pretty much carrying the movie, but it was great story of survival.

Based it a music genre that he created which I take is slang for, " I can say whatever I want however I want because I invented it." This kid is like a friggen idiot savant or something. When he is with The Pack he raps completely different then when he is Lil B. Furthermore when he does actual songs as apposed to his "based freestyles" there is another big difference. In his freestyles he says the most outlandish, off the wall, crazy stuff ever...and its great. Ellen DeGeneres, Dr. Phil, Miley Cyrus, I'm Jesus are just a few of the titles of his music.

Antone Sugar should be in horror films. This guy is stone cold! He killed everybody he came across. Most of with he killed with a high pressure airgun. The only gripe I have about the film is the character that Josh Brolin plays. He was too smart to be so dumb. He went back to give the dying Mexican drug runner some water??? Nawh...nope...no way. Besides that the movie is excellent! Woody Harrelson shows up kinda for no reason but he adds a new dimension to the film. And in true Coen Brothers fashion the movie ends leaving the viewers with a make your own conclusion ending. And Tommy Lee Jones is the Old Guy, wondering what happened to this World.

Movie Review: TRON Legacy

You don't need to see the first Tron to get into this but it helps out A LOT! I saw the first one about 2 months ago and thought that it was really groundbreaking for its time as far as effects go. This picks up 20 years after the original. Sam Flynn gets sucked into the same world that his Father has been trapped in for 20 years. He discovers that everything has went wrong and that his Father's plan was stopped by the very program that he created. CLU took over TRON and thus the fight to destroy CLU ensues. The movie isn't bad it's just long. A few hot chicks, a few cool battles, and the Light Cycles are DOPE! Plus, Jeff Bridges is like the Hippie version of Obi Wan Kenobi. Sometimes the CGI of Jeff Bridges from 30 years ago was spot on and sometimes it just looked exactly like a cartoon.

Ok at first you think this movie is going to be great. Jonah Hill is cool. John C. Reilly is the man! And Marisa Tomei is hot. Man this movie is weird. Like creepy weird. John C. Reilly plays a divorced dude and he meets Marisa's character at a party. She hides the fact that she has a 22 year old, man child of a son that is basically in love with his mother. The movie is a creepfest ok. It weirded me out and I was about to turn it off, but I kept watching it. The lengths to which Jonah went to in keeping John C. Reilly away from his mother were just beyond bizarre and upsetting.
