NEW MUSIC: DRAG Vs. LMS

The late 90's Rap Group from Baltimore - LMS consisting of Erik Nell, Forbidden & Blax - had a string of underground hits, "Pure Necessities", "Harm City Slaughter" and later "Eclipse."
I remember listening to Rap Attack (when it was still came on in the morning) hearing their songs and I even bought the single on cassette. They were a solid group with good records but never released an album. Through some searching (thanks to Beat Connexion) I found the instrumental version of these songs. I had the idea to mix my vocals and re- create the sound of their original instrumental and also attempt to merge their vocals into the re-created production that I constructed. This is DRAG vs. LMS.

PenDragon - I Got Hits 4 Cheap: Draggy Baby Edition (Team Arson) It's funny, Drag is one of these guys that gets on my nerves for calling himself the "king" of the city and this and that, but he also gets my respect for totally watching everyone's moves and sizing up the competition (he's always sending me links to other people's videos and music before know about them). And really between his production skills, and the heart and intelligence and humor that come across in his music, he has as much of a chance at making a run at the title as anyone these days, in my opinion. Not that I think there is a title, or that there should be. "

Now do I agree with 7th place. Hell no. I figured 410 Pharaohs was gonna get #1 cause they are on that Baltimore Shit! A lil club, a lil hip-hop. #2 is Brown Fish's "Bootleg III: F.I.S.H. & Friends... The Mixtape," which Al even says isn't a mixtape or an album. #3 is a compliation of songs from the Wire. "Beyond Hamsterdam: Baltimore Tracks from The Wire," so once again some Baltimore shit. Honestly from the cover alone I shoulda got #1. But I digress, I'm sounding Kanye-ish. I appreciative of Al even having a list or caring enough to put one together let alone putting me on it. I'm just saying.

The homie Al Shipley wrote about the show at Suite last Thursday. Here's what he had to say:

"PenDragon recently released one of our favorite local mixtapes of the year so far, I Got Hits 4 Cheap, a mostly self-produced disc that strikes an unlikely balance between a contemporary hip-hop sound befitting his Jay-Z-esque flow and more offbeat, humorous touches--Cookie Monster samples, audio fan letters to Lisa Turtle from Saved by the Bell--and flirtations with dance music. When PenDragon was billed as a solo performer on Thursday, we were hoping to hear a good amount of material from the mixtape performed live. Instead, he ceded most of his stage time to other members of his crew, Team Arson, including rappers Street Heat, Jae Poet, HyDro, and R&B singer Nova. So PenDragon only ended up performing two songs, including the I Got Hits highlight "Never B4," while five other Team Arson artists each got one before the DJ informed them that their stage time was up.

While some of Drag's label mates had strong material, we couldn't help but be disappointed that he got rushed off the stage before doing all the songs he intended. And given that there were only four acts on Thursday, all of which played within the space of two hours, the club probably could've let PenDragon play a little longer. Perhaps next time he can book separate Team Arson and solo sets."

I don't think ppl understand the joy I get from knowing that its Wednesday and its gonna be a new City Paper. And I am even more happy when its black ppl in it. NOT THE MURDER INK!!! Music....Music ...Music. That aspect has been absent for awhile but the homie Al Shipley wrote a huge article featuring you guested it black ppl. Profound's (reppin that R.O.P.) mixtape was featured and Al quoted what I like to call the hottest line of the month. "The crime rate done rose since last year/and everybody sayin they got signed is still here." That line is so balla!!! Told you I was gonna fix it.
