How To Make It In America - Review

Yeah yeah I'm late catching on to the show I know I know.  I've heard people talk about the show and never really know what it was about, until two weeks ago.  It's only 16 episodes each at 26-ish minutes so that's not too much of a time investment.  This show centers around Ben Epstein and Cam Calderon 2 friends in their late 20's seemingly directionless.  Ben works at Barney's and Cam works odd jobs here and there.  They tried to sell skate decks designed by a local skater Will Fredo, but since Will went crazy nobody wants to buy those decks.  Cam stumbles across a guy selling Marc Jacobs leather coats from a truck by the docks.  Ben notices that he also has a roll of Raw Japanese Denim as well.  Ben and Cam borrow money from Cam's newly freed convict cousin Renee to buy the denim to start a jean line called CRISP.  Horrible name!  Super terrible.  After they swindle more money from Ben's high school friend (Caplan) to pay a tailor to make a sample for them they realize that the sample is wrong wrong wrong!  Dude looked like Urkel!

At the same time they stumble into getting a meeting with a designer from Japan.  He hates the pants but loves the shirt Ben is wearing.  Its a shirt he designed in high school. He says he wants 300 shirts like like 2 -3 days.  They find these vintage shirts from a tip a girl in a vintage shop gave them.  They get the shirts and have them silk screened and miraculously make the deadline.

With that money they got from those shirts, they decide to go to Japan and get more shirts?  Which was odd b/c they had plenty of stock at the warehouse they found.  They decide to just do shirts and hoodies.  They now have a rival group called the Neanderthals and to be honest their clothes looked wayyyy better.  Through more luck and stumblings they end up at a house party of this supplier named Nancy.  they crashed the party and got thrown out.  Ben left the clothing samples and said he would get it the next day, which was Bullshit b/c they guarded the samples almost with their lives.  So he returned the next day to Nancy saying that her son loves the hoodie.  She convinces Ben to design a class shirt for her son's middle school.  The shirt is a success and they start to do business together.

Nancy hooks Ben and Cam up with 2 girls who supplies stores with clothes and offer them a 5500 piece order for Gadzooks stores.  It is no way they can fill the order in the time allotted so it is suggested that they use a manufacturer who so happens to be Nancy's husband Yosi.  Yosi loves the brand and gives them each $10,000 upfront.  Cam starts to have his doubts about Yosi after it's discovered that he wants to change the name to Crisp by Yosi and change the design.  Ben likes the idea and loves the money involved.  After finding out that Nancy suggested Yosi manufacture the brand Ben feels double crossed and walks away from the deal....which to is BULLSHIT b/c Cam and Ben both signed the contracts from Yosi.  Ben and Cam reconcile and Ben reveals that they are going to start to make jeans.

Now that's just the story of the brand.  There are other sub plots going on with Ben's ex, Renee and his Business Rasta Monsta and Ben and Cam's friend Domingo played by Kid Cudi.  This show isn't the best written but as I have come to learn, great shows are about characters just so much story.  Like why would Don Draper marry his secretary who is way younger out of the blue and barely knows?!  Very uncharacteristic very un-Don Draper like but still a great show.

This show is complex but very very simple.  Every character is rich and diverse and has a dream.  The only problem with this show is its unbelievability.  They trip on their dicks every episode and stumble into a pot of gold.  That's not real life.  The biggest pitfalls they have had is who are they going to borrow money from this week.  5,000 here 3,000 there, plus the level of coincidence is very high.  Still though this is a cool show with great music and the acting in it is very good.  It was cancelled after 2 seasons on HBO but executive producer Mark Wahlberg says he is going to try to get it on another channel.  REVOLT? Take That Take That!

O's Magic

I've been in Baltimore my whole life and as long as I have been alive the home team has never won a thing.  Cal Rikpen Jr. broke Lou Gehrig's record and that's about it.  I've never seen the organizations as a whole do anything phenomenal, except lose.  I'd love to root for the home team even though watching baseball is like watching cheese grow mold.  To put it bluntly I'm trying to catch O's FEVER! I want to. I really want to.  I'm following the games, seeing who did what and to see if they actually won.  I know they always start off great, on a fantastic win streak then it kinda wears off.  But I'm hoping that this season they can at least make the playoffs and not settle for not letting another team in like that sucker move they pulled last season.  Weiters, Jones and Markakis make a good core and it seems like they have some decent guys as a supporting cast this season.  So I'm hoping that they can pull it out and have a great season and start a new chapter in the Orioles franchise.

New Mixtape : Jae Poet - FreeFaller

Jae Poet's new mixtape is out NOW and here is the description that sets the tone for the album.

Description: Baltimore artist, Jae Poet (T.A.G.M.G.), makes London the setting for this mixed genre album. The sound he describes as "Beautiful Destruction" fits with the beautiful yet airy architecture of this setting. It is from the top floor of a hotel, that Jae Poet speaks of and elaborates on his interesting perspective on growth. This entire project was mixed, mastered, and arranged entirely by Jae Poet himself. He also uses mostly his own production on FreeFaller, being accompanied by very talented producers within his own circle. (i.e. Mark Shotta, Drag, Keishh, D. Bennett, and Ze. As far as features go, Jae still didn't have to go far to get an awesome cast like Jase, Rickie Jacobs, Nova Starz, DJ Craigo Gettems, Drag, Kay Lewis, and Jocelyn Smith. This 60 minutes goes from raw hip hop to wherever his imagination lands. Enjoy.

Baltimore Come Here Lemme Talk to You

Listen I know that the Inner Harbor is our "big" attraction here in Charm City.  But let's talk about the not so Charming shall we?  Let's talk about all the boarded, condemned housing unit in the city.  We spend a ridiculous amount of money for new Harbor attractions and this new 8 year "clean water revitalization" for the Harbor, but when it comes to the inner CITY nothing gets done.  In fact even the attractions outside of the Harbor are being halted.  The BioPark in Sowebo (South West Baltimore) hasn't seen any new construction for about 2 years.  The controversial planning for the new State Center has been under way for about 3 years and will probably be years if and when it ever does get funding.  The off putting thing is, the city has money for the Baltimore Grand Prix in which it was even said that they actually lose money by having the race here.  Every pothole and crumbled curb from Fells Point to Penn Station is fixed instantly, but when it comes to areas outside of tourist's view, things are abandoned.

The city swindles people in an out of hand water bill scam and the police are seemingly everywhere but where crime happens.  The city has plenty of money to put up Blue Light cameras while schools close and after school programs are shut down.  The priorities of this city are sad and apparent.  Funds are misappropriated and visitors are treated better than everyday Baltimorians.  Someone needs to fix this.  Maybe it's you.

Screen Printing your own shirts

After watching a youtube video last week, I've decided that screen printing (one color) isn't that difficult. The most expensive thing seems to be the lightbox you would need to expose the emulsion on the screen, the cheapest I've seen is $300. Seems interesting!

Act Of Valor

Ok see the thing about this film is, the action is great and it's an action movie. The acting though is pretty bad. The military men in this movie aren't actors they are real Navy Seals. The messed up part is some of the Navy men in the movie are better actors then others so it really points out the bad acting. If they were all in the same "can't act for shit" bucket then it wouldn't be so bad. But this is an action movie and unlike any other because they are using real ammo! LIVE ROUNDS! How?? I don't know! Why?! I haven't any damn clue! Seems dangerous as hell and kinda pointless seeing as how most films look good ammo - gun - killing wise these days. But the real kicker for this film is that it was shot entirely on a DSLR camera. That is pretty impressive to shoot a major film release with a camera costing less than $10,000.

The movie in a whole. Not bad at all really. Besides the crap-tastic acting from the non-actors it was an entertaining film. Things blew up, fun was had, tears, death...BOOM!

Hungry For More - The Hunger Games Alternatives

Since I am aware that The Hunger Games is just a twist on Twilight and have no need to see either, these are my suggestions for movies that go for the jugular and pull no punches.

First there is The Tournament. Ving Rymes stars in this and it is action from the moment that it comes on. 30 of the World's Top Assassins kill one another to see who is the best. There were only 3 parts that I was like "Come on man really," but it was a dope movie.

Second, it's Battle Royale ! This is set in Japan. 9th Grade trouble maker kids of this certain school get send to an unknown island where they have 3 days to kill each other. The last on alive gets to leave the island. You learn about the kids pasts, troubles and relationships with one another. A few weird things though. The beginning of the movie has nothing to do with the movie at all. The role of the Teacher is pretty weird... his character seems deep but it gets lost in the goofiness of him. The tracking necklaces the children had, had microphones on them, but it seemed that sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn't. 42 only 1 can make it...kinda. Interesting movie. Gogo from Kill Bill was in this movie.

Alcatraz Again

After breaking it down, at their current pace this show would not be over for 15 years!!

They say it's 308 inmates and they are only catching one per episode. So even if it's 25 episodes per season that would work out to 12 years. Gimme a break! Most shows don't last the first year let alone 12! The 2nd season better insert some new plot device or something b/c LOST was probably the last original great show and it struggled to get to a 6th season.

Let's Break down the Jetson's

The Jetson's was one of my favorite shows growing up. The show was set in the year 2062 and they're are some differences and similarities in how I think 2062 will play out.

In future Jetson's world they live in highrises way in the sky, b/c of the rising water.

That maybe true. I was watching the National news and they said by 2050 the waters are going to rise significantly.

In the opening scene George gives all the family member money to go shopping. Actual dollar bills.

The way the currency market is working now I'm not sure that actual dollar bills will be around much in 50 years and prob not at all in the next 100.

Rosie was a hell of a Robot/Friend/Maid but with the way robotics is going I doubt that in the 50 years robots will be that advanced.

The first episode of the 80's Jetsons, Elroy's school took a trip to the Moon and he found his pet Orbity.

With our now defunct space program I don't think schools are going to be taking many trips to the Moon.

The Jetson's had holographic Television.

This could be a reality. With the 3D TV technology getter better and better who's to say in 50 years that there isn't hologram TV?!

George had a sucky job.

They'll always be sucky jobs!

They had flying cars.

I doubt the flying cars of the future will be a reality. With gas approaching almost 5 bucks a gallon these days, the price to make your car fly would probably be ridiculous!

Sit Down Apple I wanna talk to you a minute.

Listen I know the passing of Steve has been a difficult one, but really you have got to stop putting out these little half projects that has been coming out. The world was waiting for the iPhone 5 and you put out the 4S? It does like 2 new cool things. The people were all clambering about the iPad 3 and you put out the iPad HD? You're falling into minutia and almost getting down to knick knacks. Apple was known for making new products either annually or bi-annually and the public knew it to be different and quality. I'm not saying that the quality is lacking on any of the products, the love might be though. Knowing that you have a die hard fan base that will buy anything you put out is one thing so these acts seem sort of abusive. I want you to get back to making products that revolutionized the Tech World not marginalized it and watered it down with half hearted products.

Alcatraz

I've had the first two episodes for about 2 months. I finally watched the first 3 episodes and ummm, it's an interesting program. The inmates of Alcatraz disappeared in 1963 and have all reappeared in the present day and are all committing crimes. Big man from Lost is on here which is fitting because J.J. Abrams is the executive producer of the show. Odd thing is he seems to wear the same clothes every episode and that is strange. Another oddity is the inmates all seem proficient in the present day. The one guy told the detective to take out her keys and phone....there were no cell phones in 1960 when this person was incarcerated so how did he have knowledge of such a thing. Maybe it will be revealed in further episodes?? Who is to say? It's an ok show, something to watch hope it doesn't get cancelled before an end comes.

Movie Review : Man On A Ledge

If I was in some type of coma maybe this movie would have been better. The premise was great. Man on a Ledge! Well why is he on a ledge? That was the draw for ppl and the trailer was awesome. But when you sit down and actually digest this mess of a movie its just dumb. This whole review is a spoiler so you might just want to stop if you are at anyway for any reason interested in this film.

First the reason he was locked up in the first place made no sense. The diamond was stolen and it was believed that he cut the diamond into smaller pieces and sold them individually??? The fuck! He was a cop not fucking James Bond. I'm not sure that most cops just know a place where they can take a 40 Million Dollar Diamond and get it cut into like 100 smaller diamonds without raising the suspicions of the FBI.

The way he escaped was bullshit. He would have been shot and dead immediately.

When he was on the ledge talking to the woman detective...if he knew she was giving him a cigarette to run his prints why do it?! I think this was a flaw in the writing or something b/c that made no sense. Plus I'm not 1000% sure you can get a good match on fingerprints on a cigarette? He went to such great lengths to make sure he left no prints in the hotel room why give up the prints that easily...esp knowing that when they found out who you were it would go into high alert. Additionally HOW THE FUCK DIDN'T THEY KNOW WHO HE WAS?! He was an officer on the force that was suspected of stealing diamonds and locked up...but no one knew who he was until the prints came back??

The dynamic of his brother and his girlfriend breaking into the building was annoying as hell. Where'd they get explosives? The blueprints for the building? They said they where training for a year...how?! They tried to go Ocean's 11 but failed.

When he jumped from 12 stories onto the cushion it was just preposterous. Not only would he have been injured, he would have been so damn discombobulated he would in no way just jump up and run after the diamond guy. Plus he would have been immediately apprehended by the police since the were trying to arrest him the whole movie right. I mean that was the point right?

It's more things that were dumb about this film but I'm tired of pointing them out. Rent it if you want but ehhhhh just skip it.

Safe House

Denzel is a great character actor. Sure you can tell the bad guy within the first 15 minutes of this movie but that's not the point. Ryan Reynolds wasn't really a factor. I like Ryan Reynolds but he almost could have been any other actor in this. Partly due to the fact that it was little chemistry between Reynolds and Denzel. It's a good action flick. Simple and plain.

Movie Review - Chronicle

This movie that ppl knew very little about, turned out to be pretty cool. It's a sci-fi horror-esqe thriller. It touches on subjects of home abuse, bullying, brotherhood and the effects of these things. Andrew, Matt and Steve (Andrew and Matt are cousins) find a tunnel that leads to a glowing unexplainable crystal structure. The 3 of them gain telekinetic powers. This movie is filled with irony. Physically the weakest of the 3, Andrew who was bullied in school and beaten at home by his father had the strongest mental powers. ****SPOILER ALERT**** When Steven was hit by the airplane Andrew saved him, but Andrew was the one who killed Steven.
Andrew's father was an out of work fireman....the reason Andrew got caught... he was set on fire.

This was much more a behavioral film...nature vs nurture argument. Steven was nurtured in life and he was popular in school, class president, well liked and out going. That is why I think he was the first one to learn to fly. Andrew was worrying about his sick mother, beaten daily by his father, picked on by everyone in school and even in the neighborhood. Very introverted. He felt alone and did not know how to deal with his feelings and emotions. And Matt just went with the flow kind of a mesh of the 2.

This was a great movie. I'm glad they didn't spend any time talking about where the weird power crystal came from, that explanation would have brought the whole movie down. Great explosion in the hospital!

You Walk Around My House Smiling (funniest line of the movie)

Man this stuff is disgusting! The only time I've had Boston Cream Pie was when I worked at Charlestown and it was good stuff. So seeing that Ben & Jerry's had a flavor of ice cream to go with it I had to check it out. The yellow cake and cream parts of this taste weird as hell. The flavor of the Ice Cream is totally off. Horrible! Jerry should have told Ben to go back to the drawing board with this one.

Fishy Films

I hate any movie that says it was based on a True story. Because what parts are true?? Who knows? Its a mystery. It could all be a lie in the end. Do dolphins exist? Yes! So is that the true part? Could be? That goes for any movie especially horror films. I just don't believe it.

Anyway the premise of these movies seem pretty dumb. Not in an it's not ok it save animals type of way, but in a people don't even help other PEOPLE out type of way. Some war vets can't even get prosthetic limbs guess I have to chalk that up to the government. But watching a dolphin get a prosthetic tail is pretty insane to me when compared to that. May sound silly and might even sound cruel in some type of way, but these seem like an insensitive movies in the current state of the American people.

Going Up

In my life time nothing has went down price wise, which is pretty astounding. The price of stamps...UP. The cost of pay phones doubled and payphones are almost extinct. The price of gas is up almost 400%. I'm sure the cost of living has went up greatly but I had no idea what things cost back then so its hard to gauge that. Interestingly enough, video games have only gone up 10 dollars since the Nintendo days. Candy bars seem to be high as hell. And the thing that sparked this whole post --- Bag of chips. Crazy thing is a 25 cent bag of chips is no longer 25 cents. It's about 88 cents for the same size bag! That's a more than 300% increase with no additional product. Milk is high as hell but I'm sure the cows aren't getting paid more. Seldom in life do people get a break, so for once I'd like to see the prices of things go down. In fact the only thing that has gone down are peoples' paychecks. America needs to get back on track. Back to when it was a golden land of opportunities and freedoms. Don't get me wrong it still has wonderful things to offer but the people are suffering and I know because they told me so.

Ray Bly

While I was out taking pictures Monday on Route 1, I ran across Ray Bly. I was on my way back in town and noticed an interesting building. Then I noticed a great "keep out" sign spray painted on a barrel across the street on the side of the road. So of course I go over there and start taking pictures, because at this point I'm used to getting kicked out of places and being told I have to leave. So around the 3rd picture I took I noticed a someone was coming out of the store and I think to myself, "here we go." This little man smoking a cigarette and donning a "Proudly Served In Vietnam" hat comes towards me and says, "are you a reporter." Of course I answer things in quite a direct way and reply, "nope." Then he goes to tell me how people dump trash and things behind his store, which is a appliance repair shop.

We then talked for about an hour (he did most of the talking and I left my lights on, which I forgot because I just stepped out to take a quit picture) about numerous subject. He told me that he runs for Congress every once in awhile. He explained to me that he has seen more death and blood in his 40 some odd years on Route 1 then in his 2 years in Vietnam. He also told me that Crazy Ray's is involved in Organized Crime.

He's views are unique, though I'm sure many other Americans feel the same way about various topics as he does. He represents a much more simple time, where Blogs, Tweets and FaceBook Status' didn't exist. He understands what tough times really are because he has seen them and lived through them. He comes from a time where people worked hard, earned their money and if they were lucky enough to own a TV watched their favorite show when they got home. A time where celebrities were famous because they were actually talented, not just because of their last name, who they were married too or some other silly stunt.

Ray Bly understands worth, pain and sacrifice. Unmoved to any emotion when I asked about the building across the street he simply said, "That was Herman's Garage, he was murdered."

Movie Review - Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol

Tom Cruise is the man. That being said this film plays out just like an episode of the now defunct show Under Covers that came on NBC for about 12 episodes. And oddly enough both are/were produced by JJ Abrams. The action was fast paced and good chase scenes. A few corny parts. Nice gadgets. But even after all of that it still seemed like the movie was missing something. Something that I still can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it was the whole "Russian Launch Codes" thing. I don't know. I'm just glad that the twist that I thought was going to happen didn't. Ving Rhames shows up at the end for nostalgic reasons I guess.

The Lincoln Lawyer

This was a good movie. It had a lot of twists and didn't seem illogical or seem to have a bunch of plot holes. The only downside of this film was the damn rap music they kept playing. Who was in charge of music for this film??!! Horrible choices. Even when the RZA does scores its not just rap music thrown in, it's actually cohesive sounds that make sense. It would be a great scene and then BOOM some awkward GangStarr song starts playing. Really? For real? Who's idea was that? And who approved it?

The rest of the film is excellent. It's pretty long though. But the performances are great and the story is very well written. Definitely a good movie just try to think good thoughts when the rap music kicks in.

Rest In Peace --- 2 Hale aka TRU HALE

I met 2 Hale about 8 years ago. I don't really even remember much about the homie, but when news circulated that he passed I was saddened. He passed Friday morning (11/25/11) from complications of Sickle Cell Anemia. Below is a song that he recorded in Feb of this year.

Here is what Amoion of Deep Flow Studios had to say about him.

"I did not realize how much my heart would hurt when you left us today. I know I told you I like your music as I do all the rappers who I like that I produce.
