Drake - Thank Me Later

Ok I was gonna wait til the homies album was actually released on the 15th but I might not care to write about it then. Young ADG steps to the plate to deliver his first official major label CD. Thank Me Later (Kanye had a book entitled Thank You and You're Welcome..which is a little more arrogant and balla...but) starts off with FireWorks ft. Alicia Keys. On this Alicia sounds like a sample the way she just cuts off as the hook ends. The 3rd verse to this song is the best part. "40" who produces the majority of the tracks on the album has a very minimalistic approach to beats. Lots of the production sounds incomplete in a way, but that's his style I guess. The next song Karaoke is pretty bad so I skip it. I hate the beat lyrics ahhhh skip skip skippity do da. The Resistance is the shit! Drake chanting that people promised that he would "never change," is the reality that he brings to his music that I enjoy. I skip "Over" at this point. The Kanye West produced "Show Me A Good Time," is ahhh good time. And the mixing of him saying "Ah Yeah" on the hook is hilarious! "Up All Night" ft. Nicki Minaj is cool. The beat is dope, produced by Boi-1da but Nicki's verse is hot and cold. "I look like yes, and you look like no," is kinda weak but then she states "which bitch you know made a million off a mixtape?" Now that's a statement. "Fancy" should def be a single. It's a good song with a great vibe, and Swizz is my dude. "Shut It Down" ft. The Drama Queen, I mean The Dream should be Shut DOWN!!!! Horrible, bad bad bad. Dream's annoying voice mixing with Drake's annoying voice is a terrible idea. "Unforgettable" ft. Young Jeezy features a dope Aaliyah sample. The hook is kinda weird though and hard to distinguish. "Light Up" ft. Jay-Z is ill. Drake's verse is ill and reflects the early 90's coming up and Jay-Z sheds light and gives advice to the young boy. Even though HOV tried to slip in a triple entendre??? C'mon son. Hour, Owls and Owww??? Nawh. "Miss Me" ft. DeWayne Carter is cool, Wayne doesn't really talk about anything on his verse but then again...he never really does. But it almost seemed like this song should have a point or main theme..It's called Miss Me right!! "Cece's Interlude" is garbage trash. "Find Your Love" is a great song to me. The hyponotic chants of "Hey, Hey, Hey" though very What's Happening-ish, and the bold statements he made make the song a hit. "Thank Me Now" is a great closer. Doesn't sound like a Timbaland beat at all, but it works.

Overall, I give this CD a 7 out of 10. Too much singing brings this down for me. Don't get me wrong his singing is cool, but when you are doing boy band duets with The Dream lines must be drawn. This is no So Far Gone, and Drake still lacks a bite or aggressiveness to make me think that he is anything but an emo heartbroken rapper. He is like the rap version of Kid Cudi. Drake has his lane and drives in it well. A few bumps in the road that may get smoothed out eventually or just may get deeper. It's funny that the same thing that I like about him is thing that I dislike aswell. His ability to draw for his life and put his emotions and feelings on the line is admirable but gets dull after a few runs and turns into a one trick Royal Mountie Pony.

Drake - New Music - More Music Videos

This song took a second to grow on me but it's dope. The song reminds me of a 80's Phil Collins track. Riding at sunset through the city with the top down feeling an ocean breeze. DragonBoy doesn't like it and many others won't and I understand there reasons. Drake isn't at this point trying to appeal to hardcore Hip-Hop heads....CAUSE YA'LL DON'T BUY ALBUMS!! He is targeting the actually crowd that puts money into what they like. There is nothing special about his singing either but the fact that he puts his balls on the line and does it is a very gutsy move. I applaud the young man, and I hope his album doesn't suck.

DRAKE - Over Music Video

ADG -- what you doing man?? You could either be the biggest artist in the last few years or an obscure artist that had all the potential in the world to be big. Remember Canibus?! I don't know who this kid has as an advisor but they are leading this guy astray I say. "Over" has already had its criticisms as being sort of lackluster as a 1st single from an artist with sooooo much hype around him. Then when I saw him speak about the video, it already sounded like it was going to be bad. Saying that it was a love story??? What's wrong with this guy? Do you wanna be known as the guy that makes chick songs? Fabolous just got out of that stigma kinda. LL never did.

"Best I Ever Had" video where he wanted to show his acting (umm you were on a friggen TV show for like 15 seasons) was one of those " I saw it once, I'm good" type of videos. A lot going on but nothing in particular that was interesting. "Successful" video ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ total snoozer. This kid writes lyrics that has all sorts of imagery in them, but when you see the video nothing is there. "Over" video, why are you sitting in a little girl's bedroom alone? Why do the effects look cheesy and why so many different projected images? It's like he is in a scene in The Poltergeist. Am I being brainwashed?

It seems like the classic case of "I'm going to do things completely different," but its so different that it doesn't relate. The song is so directional itself that if it was a regular video with a few twists it would have been perfect. He is trying to be Kanye "Flashing Lights" different but it's not translating. Him and The Minaj are hyped up so much and they are trying to be so different but their singles fall short not only of people's expectations, but just on a scale of being good. Dare to be different, but a good idea is a good idea and Drake needs a couple. The problem is though that he seems like those kinds of people that you can't tell "yo this is wack" b/c he will give you some long ass "we are the music, ghost of Hip-Hop future past" speech that'll leave you like "whatever homie." So, I think Drake's music will still be good and his videos will still be horrible, plain, and under the top. Plus these 2 random ass girls in the video can't even really brag about being in it. They are in it for like 2 shots and none are actual scenes with him.

Drake - "Over"

This is for the homie Peat. Recently Drake released his new single "Over" from his upcoming album Thank Me Later and it hit the internets like a tidal wave. This Boi-1da produced track has a very thematic and triumphant, old school (and by that I mean late 90's...crazy right) approach to sampling almost a mix between Kanye West and Dj Toomp. And I like that Drake stuck with his producer and not one of his new industry buddies for his single. That's like me getting on and using a Neptunes beat or Timbaland beat instead of using my own, Street's, Mark Shotta's, or Blaze P's beats 1st. DRAKE ISN'T THE 2ND COMING OF JESUS!! I think once people stop putting him on a pedestal and just listen to the music everybody will be much better off in the long run. The song doesn't blow me away, but I don't think any song Drake does blows me away....what blows me away is his approach to songs. He could've went the money, girls and fame route but yet again kept it consistent and talking about his real actual life and events and feelings. Call it EmoRap if you want but what do you think ScarFace was/is...Biggie at his best "I swear to God it feels like Death is fucking callin me," Jay-Z Lucky Me, damn there all of 2pac's music. It's dealing with emotion and feelings. I think that's his allure and why people like him because in his on way he is honest. He doesn't claim to be the baddest and bus guns and kill people because he knows it isn't believable for him to pull off because you can turn on Noggin and watch Jimmy in his wheelchair on Degrassi and say "He is rich." I'm not even rich and I be looking around sometimes like "who the fuck are ya'll" so I know that when you go from the bassment to the top floor there are a whole lot of new riders on that elevator that used to take the stairs. And Ebert even likes it..."C'mon, Man" (c) Ogun. Point is...hardcore East coast rap lovers are gonna HATE it. If you like Kanye you gonna LOVE it....the clubs gonna play it cause of the hook "I'm doin meeeee, I'm doing meeee," you can just imagine all the half drunk people on the dance floor yellin' this at the top of their lungs. P.S. if I would have made that graphic for the single people woulda looked at me like I was crazy. It's so simple I love it, people over complicate things so much that it's nice to see something so simple.
